Having a proper garage in Orlando, Florida is not only essential for the look of your home, but the overall function of the space. If you’re going to have a garage, you might as well have one that does its job right. Top real estate agents in the area would also agree that a well functioning garage can boost the value of your home. While some people’s garages might be just fine and up to date, others might just need a little bit of work. For those with garages that are outdated, run down, or in need of a pick-me-up, we’ve got some garage remodeling steps for you to follow for a job well done. Here’s how to get started.

    1. Assess what needs to be worked on

While some people will want to work on their garage out of a desire for a new and exciting project, others are doing so because their garage is basically useless. Make an assessment of what needs to be done and how much work will need to go into your garage.

    2. Decide what you want out of your garage

Garages are usually used to store cars, but that’s just surface level. Will you be using your garage to simply park your car(s)? Or will it function as an area to fix up vehicles or other belongings, as a working space, or all of the above? Decide on the functionality of your garage before moving forward with the other steps.

    3. Choose a style that will mesh with your property

Once you have  the foundational plans of what you will be doing with your garage, move forward with deciding how it’s going to look. What type of flooring is it going to have? What will the garage door look like? What color and material are the walls going to consist of? These questions will help you when it comes to ordering materials.

    4. Hire a contracting company

Unless you’re a contractor yourself, hiring a contractor to help you complete these renovations is an important step. Hire someone who is experienced in garage renovations as they will be resourceful in buying materials, assessing the building plans, obtaining proper permits, and more!

    5. Order materials

Once the building plans are finalized and you’re sure of how you want the space to look and feel, move forward with purchasing materials. Every project is going to require different materials, but some might include siding, drywall, paint, primer, epoxy, and more. Your contractor will be of use when choosing the right materials for the process.

    6. Remove pieces that are no longer useful

Before you get to work, you’ll want to have a plan to remove any parts of your former garage that are no longer useful. The larger the project, the more items you will likely need to dispose of. Have a plan for removing this trash, especially if there is a lot of it. A dumpster might be necessary.

    7. Build out the structure and framework

Once the materials arrive and your garage space is build-ready, get started on the framework. This could include the new structure, flooring, and more. Solidifying the framework is necessary for a structurally sound garage.

    8. Add in any additional details

Upon completing the framework for the garage, you can begin adding in the details. This includes windows, doors, and other structural pieces.

    9. Apply paint and finishes

Paint and finishing will be one of the final steps in the process, but are just as important. Be sure to go with best painting practices to not only complete the look, but to also withstand the elements that Orlando experiences. Primers and finishes are oftentimes necessary to the process.

    10. Put in storage and furniture

Once the base of the garage is complete, you can begin to add in storage pieces and furniture to complete the garage look. Storage is your friend in garages, and shelving can go a long way in keeping everything organized.

    11. Wrap up the project

Congratulations on your newly renovated garage. Be sure to complete any finishing touches before moving on to enjoying your new space!

Renovating a garage, regardless of what state yours is currently in, can feel like a burden. Luckily, with some proper planning, a good contractor, and some patience, yours can be good as new in no time!
